Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering (JUPAS code: JS 3064)

Introduction

The Higher Diploma Programme in Electrical Engineering aims to provide the necessary balance of theoretical studies and practical training to students for a career as Technician Engineer in Electrical Engineering. The programme is very similar to the first 1 1/2 year of the BEng programme. Graduates of this programme have priority in applying for admission to the BEng (Hons) programme in EE for HD holders.

Programme Structure

  • Students study all essential elements of electrical engineering, supported by physics, mathematics, electronics, computing, mechanical engineering, Chinese, English and General Studies.
  • Year One covers a diverse range of Foundation Subjects, such as Physics, Mathematics, Languages Computing and Electronics. Year One teaching extends to the summer.
  • Year Two covers essential technical subjects in electrical engineering. Students will also undertake a Group Project during this year.

Cheung Sai Lung (2012)

I only scored a 2 in Chinese in my HKDSE and felt very frustrated. In facing the dilemma of retaking the exam or studying in a Higher Diploma programme, I chose the latter option. Without any doubt, my decision was correct.


During my first year of studies at PolyU, I took subjects such as physics, calculus, circuit analysis and so on, which built up a basis of knowledge that I will be able to apply in engineering. Further, PolyU requires students to attend industrial training and I benefited a lot from it. In short, PolyU equips students well with theories and practical experience. Are you ready to join us?

Cheung Kam Kau (2011)

Electrical Engineering covers various topics, from power and energy systems, machine drives and electric transportation to fibre optics and more. The HD in Electrical Engineering programme provided me with timely, practical information about the generation and transmission of electricity. The professors were helpful and knowledgeable, encouraging students to ask questions and helping them find the answers.


The Department of Electrical Engineering maintains numerous laboratories, such as the computer centre, electrical machine laboratory and electrical engineering laboratory. The facilities are equipped with up-to-date hardware and software that enable students to gain a deep understanding of both theoretical and practical information.


The most memorable time I had on campus was the final year project with my group mates. This project allowed me to apply the knowledge I learned in lessons to the development of an electrical product. In addition to the material provided in lessons, my teammates and I also learned how to use references from different areas and work independently.
