Core Expertise

The Department of Electrical Engineering has four core areas of expertise which are well known in the industrial and academic community; both locally and internationally. They are:

  • Control & Computing - intelligent systems, system identification, control applications, robotics, autonomous vehicles, prediction and forecast, adaptive control, and industrial process control.
  • Fiber Optics and Materials - fibre-optics components, optical communications and fibre-optics sensors
  • Power Systems - power system deregulation and restructuring, dynamic stability and security assessment, application and optimization of FACTS devices, intelligent protection devices and AI methods, and real-time digital power system simulation.
  • Utilization - power electronics, machines and drives, motion control systems, railway engineering, renewable energy, electric cars, wind and solar systems.

Research and Consultancy

The Department is very active in high quality research in the above four core expertise areas. On average each academic staff publishes more than 5 journal papers each year. The Department is remaining faithful to PolyU’s commitment to applied research.

The research infrastructure of the EE Department has been flourishing with the injection of generous funds from various sources in the last several years. As a result, the Department has spent more than thirty million dollars to set up research laboratories in parallel with our teaching laboratories. Efforts have been made to recruit and maintain high caliber staff members.

The Department works very closely with both power utilities as well as with railway corporations. A number of staff are leading experts to serve and to provide novel solutions to local industries and international enterprises.
