Tak-shing CHUNG was born in Hong Kong in 1949 and received his primary and secondary school education in Hong Kong. After graduating from Queen’s College with distinction he entered University of Hong Kong in 1968. He received BSc(Engineering) Honours degree in Electrical Engineering from The University of Hong Kong, MSc degree in Electrical Power and Machines from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London U.K., and PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Strathclyde University U.K. in 1971, 1975 and 1993 respectively.

Between 1971 and 1977 he worked in Hong Kong Electric Co. Ltd. where he was Engineer in Transmission and Distribution Department. He was awarded Confederation of British Industries Scholarship to undergo engineer training in Hawker Siddeley Engineering Group U.K. in 1993-4. He then joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Department of Electrical Engineering in 1977 as a Lecturer, and became a Senior Lecturer in 1981, an Assistant Professor in 1991. He was subsequently promoted to Associate Professor in 1994 and then to Professor in 1999. He is presently Associate Head and Power Group Leader in the department.

Dr. Chung has published over 160 technical papers in international refereed journals including IEE Proceedings and IEEE Transactions as well as international conferences. His research interests include power system analysis and control, dynamic security assessment, transient energy function techniques, artificial intelligence applications, EMS and alternative energy technologies. He is now the Group Leader of Power Systems Group in Department of Electrical Engineering, Hong Kong Polytechnic University as well as Programme Leader of M. Eng. in Electrical Engineering degree programmes.

Professor Chung has made significant contributions in organising and promoting professional activities in Electrical Engineering and especially in electric power engineering. He was Chairman of IEE Hong Kong in 1993-94, Chairman of IEEE Hong Kong Section Power Chapter in 1989 and was Founding Chairman of IEE Hong Kong Power Section in 1996-98. He has taken active part in numerous international conferences and was Technical Chairman of IEE APSCOM Conferences in both 1993, 1997 and 2000, Vice Chairman of Organising Committee of APSCOM Conference in 1991 and 1995. He is appointed as Associate Editor of both Int. Journal of Electrical & Power Engineering as well as Modern Electric Power Journal. He is also invited as International Advisor of several international conferences including IEEE ICEC'95 in Australia, ECAAA-97 in China, IPEC-97 in Singapore, ICPST'98 in Beijing and IEEE POWERCON 2000 in Australia. He has been invited as Hon. paper reviewer for international journals including IEE Proceedings Part C, HKIE Transactions, Electric Power Systems Research, Electric Power and Energy Systems and Energy- The International Journal. He has been appointed as External Examiner in Ph D examinations in universities in Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong as well as for Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering Course of IVE. He has been HKIE Accreditation Panel Member of Engineering Degree Programmes in Hong Kong as well as RGC Engineering Panel Member.

Prof. Chung is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of IEE, a Senior Member of IEEE and a Member of HKIE. He is a Student Counsellor of IEE in Hong Kong and IEE Hon. Membership Interviews Co-ordinator in Electrical Engineering in Hong Kong. He is currently Committee Member of IEE Hong Kong and Electrical Discipline Advisory Panel Member in HKIE.
