T.F. Chan was born in 1951. He received the B.Sc.(Eng.) and M.Phil. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Hong Kong, in 1974 and 1980. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from City University London, UK, in 2005. Since 1978, he has been with the EE Department, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he is now Associate Head. His research interests are self-excited a.c. generators, permanent-magnet machines, and intelligent control of motor drives.  In 2006 and 2009, Dr. Chan was twice awarded a Prize Paper by IEEE Power Engineering Society Power Generation and Energy Development Committee. In 2007, he co-authored a book entitled “Distributed Generation - Induction and Permanent Magnet Generators” (Wiley). Another book entitled “Applied Intelligent Control of Induction Motor Drives” is being written (with Dr. Keli Shi as co-author) and will be published soon by Wiley.

Dr. Chan is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (UK), Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Hong Kong), and Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
