Derek Or received his BSc with 1st Class Honors, MPhil (Teaching Company Scheme), and PhD (part-time mode) degrees in 1995, 1997, and 2001, respectively, all from PolyU. Upon completion of his Bachelor education, Derek started an industrial career in ASM Assembly Automation Ltd. where he had worked extensively in advanced electronic materials, ultrasonic device design, process monitoring and control, high-frequency ultrasonic wire-bonding equipment, and product marketing in both Hong Kong and Singapore for almost six years, through the ranks of Teaching Company Associate, R&D Electronic Engineer I, and Senior R&D Electronic Engineer. Specifically, he had established an Ultrasonics Research Laboratory in ASM, and his invented in-process ultrasonic wire-bond quality monitoring technology and high-frequency ultrasonic wire-bonding transducer and process technologies led to a crucial format for ultrasonic wire-bonding equipment in the semiconductor industry. Derek moved to the US in late 2000 and worked as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in advanced sonar transducer and actuator materials and systems in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His work on the dynamic magnetoelastic properties of polymer-bonded Terfenol-D particle and short-fiber giant magnetostrictive composites has opened up the opportunity to develop advanced magnetostrictive devices with increased operating frequencies, mechanical durability, shape novelty, and cost-effectiveness. Derek began his academic career as Lecturer in Materials Science and Technology in the Department of Applied Physics at PolyU in September 2002 and became Assistant Professor in May 2005. He has been Associate Professor in Utilization in the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) since July 2008. He has also held Adjunct Professorship at Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2008 and at Zhejiang University since 2009.
Derek’s research interests include multifunctional materials (advanced functional or smart materials with coupled magneto-/electro-/thermo-/mechano-/optical responses), smart devices and systems (self-powered/power-free wireless sensors, sensoriactuators, sensoritransducers, transformers/converters/inverters, ultrasonic motors, precision/robotic mechanisms, etc. and their integrated systems), condition and health monitoring, energy harvesting and storage, ultrasonics and vibrations, automation and precision equipment, electronics assembly and packaging, and biomedical devices. He has over 16 years of continued research experience with an outstanding record of research performance in the three aspects of basic research, applied research, and industrial research. Since joining PolyU in September 2002, Derek has established 38 research projects with funding support of about HK$40.49M from government agencies, industries, and PolyU. As PI, he has secured over HK$20.19M for 27 research projects, including about HK$10.30M for 10 GRF/HKPFS/ITF projects from the HKSAR Government, HK$5.98M for 3 projects from industries, and HK$3.91M for 14 projects from PolyU. By utilizing the research capabilities established through the secured research grants and the laboratory initiative/development grants acquired from EE and the HKSAR Government, Derek started the Multifunctional Materials and Systems Laboratory (MMSLab) in EE in 2008, and has directed it to become a strategic research laboratory of EE and PolyU in the field with 260 m2 space and having over 60 sets of modern design, manufacturing, and characterization equipment and facilities valued in excess of HK$12M. In addition, Derek has been maintaining about 9 members in his research group on average, and today there are about 43 former members, including 11 PhD graduates, 6 MPhil graduates, and 26 research/technical staff, serving various enterprises, universities, and research institutes/laboratories worldwide.
Derek has produced over 210 research publications since 1998 (lifetime), including 2 professional book chapters, 1 monograph, 39 patents for 14 inventions, >125 SCI journal papers (>75% in Grade-A or top-20% journals, h-index ~ 21), and >45 international conference papers. Importantly, he was ranked No. 1 (19 papers), No. 2 (27 papers), and No. 23 (32 papers) in ISI Web of Knowledge in terms of the number of SCI journal papers published in the “magnetostrictive”, “magnetoelectric”, and “piezoelectric” topics in the past three years from 2008 to 2010. Also importantly, he has transferred about one half of the patent inventions to industries for product development. Moreover, Derek is recipient of a number of research-related awards and honors. At PolyU, he was honored for Performance Reward in 2010, The President’s Award for Excellent Performance and Achievement in Research and Scholarly Activities in 2006, Faculty Award for Outstanding Performance and Achievement in Research and Scholarly Activities in 2006, Outstanding Professional Services and Innovation Awards – International Award for five items from 2006 to 2009, Highest Licensing Values Award in 2002, and Tuition Scholarship for Postgraduate Research Studies for six times from 1995/96 to 2000/01. In Hong Kong, he was awarded The Best Paper on Materials from The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) in 2006. Nationally, he won Silver Medals for two inventions in the 15th China Exhibition of Inventions in 2005. Internationally, he got Gold Awards in the 37th and 39th International Exhibition of Inventions, New Techniques and New Products of Geneva, Switzerland in 2009 and 2011, Bronze Awards in the 58th and 60th International Ideas, Inventions and Innovations Trade Fair (IENA) of Germany in 2006 and 2008, and Gold Award in the Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) of Korea in 2002.
Derek is Senior Member of IEEE, Member of ASME, Associate Editor of Journal of Computer Science, Informatics and Electrical Engineering, Associate Editor of Journal of Mechanical, Aerospace and Industrial Engineering, and Reviewer for 17 SCI journals. He has served as Chair (2007 and 2008), Vice-Chair and Chair-Elect (2005 and 2006), and Secretary (2003 and 2004) for IEEE-CPMT Hong Kong Chapter, Committee Chair/Member for 5 international conferences/workshops, Critical Reviewer for 1 professional book, Chair for 3 overseas PhD/Master’s thesis defense committees, and External Examiner for 7 overseas PhD theses. He has also organized/co-organized 32 professional workshops/short courses under the name of IEEE-CPMT Hong Kong Chapter since 2003, besides delivering 17 invited professional seminars/lectures and 8 invited international conference/symposium presentations to the related communities.
