Professor M. Suleyman Demokan received the BSc degree with high honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Middle East Technical University ( Turkey ) in 1970, and the MSc and PhD degrees in Electronic Engineering from King's College, University of London in 1972 and 1976, respectively.
He served in the Middle East Technical University , Gaziantep Campus, in various capacities, including the Head of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, between 1976 and 1983. After conducting research for a year at Imperial College ( University of London ) as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow, he joined the Hirst Research Centre of the General Electric Company (UK) in 1984, where he directed contract research as Head of Department (Optoelectronic Components) and Chief Scientist (Optical Communications).
Since 1988, he has been with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University where he was promoted to Chair Professor in 1992. He was the Head of the Electrical Engineering Department between 1988 – 1995; the Dean of the Engineering Faculty between 1995 – 2000 and 2004 – 2005; the Associate Vice President between 1997 – 2000; and the Vice President overseeing University research and academic appointments & promotion between 2000 – 2003. He has been appointed as the Vice President overseeing academic affairs since 2005.
Professor Demokan's current research interests include optical communication systems (especially photonic crystal fibers), and various types of optical sensors. He has published one research monograph, one textbook, two book chapters and more than 190 refereed papers by the end of 2007. He has served on the Editorial Board of two international journals, and organized various international conferences.
He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (UK), and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (USA).
