Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical Engineering

Introduction

Research students pursue a specific aspect of a subject in depth, with a view to contributing to the existing body of knowledge, under the supervision of a staff member with similar research interests. PhD students are also expected to produce evidence and argument supporting an original proposition that results in a significant contribution to knowledge of a subject.

Students are also required to complete certain taught and guided-study subjects before submitting their theses. These subjects are chosen by the student, with advice from the supervisor, from a wide range on offer. The requirements for this compulsory coursework component* are 15 credits (equivalent to 5 MSc. subjects).

Entrance Requirements

You should normally possess a relevant Bachelor's degree with First or Second Class Honours from a recognized institution.  Assuming that your application is successful, it is usual for you to be initially registered for an MPhil degree programme – with the possibility of transferring later to a PhD degree programme.

However, if you have a recognized Master's degree containing a dissertation component in a relevant subject area, you can apply for direct admission to a PhD degree programme.
